The metric system

Considering the time most of the world has counted in decimal numbers, many millennia have passed before it seems to have realised that measurements ought to follow in the same manner. To anyone born in the last few decades, the old measurement systems must seem very confusing and bizarre. Why would anyone want to count their currency in differing number system all at the same time, i.e. 12 pennies to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound; 16ozs to the pound, 14 pound to the stone.
