What is a Grease Trap (Bac Degraisseur) and how does it work

Grease, oil and fat solids are a problem for sewage collection and treatment, because of their poor solubility in water and tendency to separate from the general liquid solution. Grease and fat in a warm solution may appear to flow freely but as the liquid cools the grease and fat congeal and this eventually coats the waste pipes causing blockages, creates a nauseous mat on the surface of the settlement tank and generally hinders the effective treatment of the waste water. Therefore, if your fosse is more than 10 metres from the areas (primarily the kitchen but the bathroom waste should also be considered) producing the grease waste, a Grease Trap is recommended, in many case a requirement.

The trap works by slowing down the flow of warm or hot fatty water by the use of baffles covering the inlet and outlet to the tank, thereby allowing the liquid to cool sufficiently so that the grease and oil separate and float to the top of the chamber. The grease can then be disposed of in the correct manner. Depending on your requirements, domestic grease traps are normally supplied in 3 sizes – 200, 300 and 500 litres.
