Medieval France was a conglomeration of independent states until Louis XIV consolidated the power of the monarchy and centralised the government of all regions to Versailles. Modern France is divided into 26 regions, 21 being on mainland France, plus Corse an island in the Mediterranean and the remaining 4 being Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Réunion.
